tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-263941492024-02-21T08:44:50.237-05:00BACK AGAIN TO BOSNIAIn the summer of 2012, I'm back in Sarajevo working with people who are good journalists and after all this time also good friends. My language skills are no better, alas, but I hang out with natives and internationals in the know. So I'm planning in this space to tell Bosnian stories to American readers, with my Bosnian friends free to call me out on errors or wrong headed interpretations. This is a fascinating area of the world and these are interesting times.Rosemary Armaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00519852269997131261noreply@blogger.comBlogger1024125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26394149.post-64909222615763683602012-08-12T13:59:00.002-04:002012-08-12T13:59:49.157-04:00<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

Everyone in Sarajevo has war stories or memories, at least comparisons to make about before and after the brutal 1990s siege, but none brings the time back so vividly as Aida Cherkez. A mutual friend describes her as Bosnia’s post-war Nora Ephron. She puts it this way. “I’ve erased everything,” she said, “and those years have become a Monty Python Show in my head.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
It’s true, I’ve heard her retell some of the same stories more than once, rehearsing, playing with the timing of them. Friends request certain tales, as they would a certain song if she were a musician. We all urge her to write a book.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Cherkez is the bureau chief in Bosnia for the Associated Press where she’s worked since during the war, a serious journalist. But her war stories glint with mischief and a love of her hometown that comes from knowing it before it became a synonym for battleground.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“I can’t tell you,” she will say talking about those innocent pre-war days when Sarajevo was an Olympic city, “how unimportant it was who we were. When I married my first husband, I didn’t know that he was Serb.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">

Aida Cherkez in Sarajevo</div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
School kids grew up with friends who were also Muslim, or Croat or Serbian. “As kids we’d skip school, math especially. And one day we were out of school and thinking ‘What do we do?’ We started smoking and when you are kids, smoking means you have a pack and you smoke it all, right?</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“And this boy said he will go into the Hadz Mosque. It’s still there, the one near Inat Kuca (a restaurant on the city’s western edge).</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“Late afternoon he sneaked into a room of the mosque – there was a little record player. They didn’t actually sing from the minaret. They broadcast the music. He was gonna change that record and we would see what happened.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“We sat around smoking in the graveyard next door and waiting for the call to prayer . Then suddenly Mick Jagger was singing, and “Angie” is ringing out across the city.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“If that happened now,” Aida adds with a laugh. “ Can you imagine? The High Representative would be there. They’d call an international conference.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
She had worked in a bank and in a casino, got married and had a son, and was in her late 20s when war came in 1992. Bosnian Serbs set up a firing line around the mountains down into the city. So Aida signed up. She was, she says, “embarrassed to sit in cellar listening to the shelling and let someone else save me.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“But the army didn’t really know what to do with women in the beginning,” of hostilities that would go on for more than three years. Her first assignment was grating green chalk and mixing it with Nivea face cream to make camouflage.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
But she’d studied German and picked up English so before long she was an assistant to Gen. Mustafa Talijan, in charge of the defense of Sarajevo and head of what she calls the Bosnian Army’s International Press Center. It was, she says, “basically a room that had me in it and a power supply. You’d plug in your sat (satellite) phone and put in whatever I would tell you.” She talked until the general kicked the pocket door that separated the press center from his cubicle three times. That meant he wanted coffee.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Cherkez shipped her infant son with her mother to Germany to get away from a war that went on and on. The two women, both stressed about killings and money and separation, fought ferociously over everything on the phone including how to raise the boy. Then one day her mother told her angrily, “Look, I am in Germany because I’m taking take of your child. But I left my child there!</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“After that, I never argued with her,” Cherkez said.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Cherkez went eventually from working with reporters to working as one. She became part of an Associated Press team housed in the Belvedere Hotel covering the vicious war. And this is her story of the Tripod Cow.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“The hotel owner had signed a contract with the AP that required him to supply so much food including meat” to the news team. That got harder and harder to live up to as the siege around Sarajevo tightened, but “somehow one August he got a cow,” Cherkez says. “I don’t know where. He probably bought it from a Serb. He thought he could feed us off of that for a while. But there was no refrigeration, no ice.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“So his idea was to get a surgeon from Kosovo Hospital and have him amputate one leg. Then he could keep the cow until he needed more meat. I had a friend who was a surgeon and the two of them had a major moral and philosophical discussion over this. He said, ‘You do it all the time to people.’ ‘Yes,’ she said, to save their lives. This would just prolong the cow’s misery. Utlimately this will cause his death.’” To which the hotelier responded “Look, this cow will die with or without you.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
“My friend telling us this, Cherkez adds, “said that she had been waiting for months, wondering, ‘Will I notice the moment when we collectively go insane?’ This was that moment in the war.”</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
Eventually the cow was slaughtered without surgical assist and the AP staff had a feas, calling in every friend and relative they could.</div>
<div style="line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;">
After all, Cherkez rationalizes the favoritism, “All is fair in love and war.”</div>

In some places around Sarajevo the hills are so steep that stairs have been installed (Actually, there's a funicular on one hill). These stairs are, of course, not shoveled in winter and badly maintained the rest of the year. Sink holes and broken stones make for exciting climbing if breathing up 80-some steps is not challenging enough. For years I've had nightmares about falling down stairs and couldn't figure out why because I'm not really afraid of stairs. I read books about dream interpretations, even asked a shrink. "Duh," I told myself as I took this photo.</div>Rosemary Armaohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00519852269997131261noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26394149.post-51315082394354783752012-07-06T08:47:00.001-04:002012-07-07T03:22:41.160-04:00Climbing Sarajevo<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

Naturally enough, they think why bother? Things never change. They never have.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But even against that setting it has been depressing to
learn this summer about the . A recent Slobodna Bosna magazine article labeled
it “The Biggest Fraud in Sarajevo.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The Tunnel is a top
tourist attraction in Bosnia now that brings in busloads of internationals.
Akin to visiting Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin or the cemeteries of Normandy,
tourists come to pay tribute to the human spirit and to the unquenchable urge
for freedom.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Back in 1993, the Bosnian
Army made a bold move to break a brutal siege of the city by Bosnian Serbs.
Soldiers dug a 1,000-meter escape route under the airport, the one spot in a
perimeter around the city the Serbs did not hold. Hundreds had died trying to
race across the airport above ground, -- so working in secret and in the dark
the Army clawed out a cramped crawlspace through which food and medicine could
come into Sarajevo and the wounded could be taken out.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-outline-level: 1;">
Sarajevans believe the lifeline
saved them.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But after the war ended in 1995 the tunnel was mostly
forgotten and people tried to move on with their lives. But the Kolars did not
forget. The Army had confiscated their house in Bitmir near the airport when
the Tunnel went in. Shells destroyed part of it, but the family lived on there
right next to the busy tunnel traffic. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When the war ended the family preserved a small section of
the Tunnel that has now mostly collapsed and they saved photos, stretchers,
food containers and other artifacts of the tunnel runs. They let people come in
to be reminded.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Gradually, the Americans and Europeans who flooded Sarajevo
after the war began to hear of the Kolars and came to visit too. The family
began charging internationals – but not Bosnians – a fee. Word spread and it
was all favorable. Check out the TripAdvisor reports even know to see what I
mean.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Around 2005, as the 10-year anniversary of the war passed,
international reports – I worked on some even myself -- bemoaned the lack of
attention Sarajevo and Bosnia state officials were giving the Tunnel. The
conventional wisdom was that it was being ignored the same way other historical
treasures in this country have been overlooked because of ethnic prejudice.
Muslims care about the Tunnel, of course, but not so much the Bosnian Serbs who
launched the siege.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yet at the 20-year anniversary mark of the war, the Tunnel
is well on the way to elevation as a full-fledged museum. Sarajevo Canton
officials have drawn up plans to redig and shore up the full length of the
tunnel and to install a tram that tourists will ride under the airport from one
end of it to the other. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-outline-level: 1;">
So, is this then, a rare good
news story in troubled and roiled Bosnia? Not a chance.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Slobodna Bosna, a magazine not renowned for it accuracy, ran
a report on the Tunnel last month that boiled down to this: The entrance to the
tunnel was not in the Kolar house at all, but actually in a house nearby owned
by the Bijelonja family. Through their doors passed all those hundreds headed
underground. Officials expropriated their home and in all the years since they
have been fighting in vain to get compensation for their loss. The courts have
backed them, human rights organizations have backed them and still they have
not gotten anything.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Meanwhile, the story goes, the politically connected Kolars
got to keep their house, got compensation as well to buy a big new house to
live in outside the city while they are pulling down at least 300 KM (about
$180) a day from tourists.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As a journalist
I marveled that there could be a dispute over the location of such a well-known
landmark. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Aida Cherkez, the staffer who covered the war for and is
still the Associated Press bureau chief in Sarajevo, gives one clue to the
puzzle. There were two entrances to the tunnel – one for the military, and the
journalists like her who covered them, was through the Kolars’ house. But the
official entrance, one added later to handle large numbers of people going
through, Cherkez said, was added through the neighboring house. She used both
entrances.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
She remembers emerging from the dankness hundreds of time at
Kolars – and taking a cup of water from grandmother Shida Kolar who stationed
herself at the doorway. After the war Cherkez wrote a story about the old woman
who always made her, a rare woman coming out of the hole with all those men,
sit and rest a while. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A CIN colleague dug up the cantonal records on the Tunnel
museum project and they confirm Cherkez’s memory. You can see on maps even if
you don’t understand Bosnian that the Tunnel ran through both houses and that
one was expropriated and the other was not.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
OK, but this does not explain why government officials would
undercut the Bijelonjas and not tell the full truth of the tunnel layout. An
official plaque hangs on the Kolar house saying that a Serb grenade went off
“in this spot “on May 7, 1995, killing civilians waiting to use the tunnel. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-outline-level: 1;">
But the grenade made a hole in
the Bijelonja house, and that is where people died. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What’s the point of such deception? And why would the
government not pay the Bijelonjas what they are asking for – it’s only the
equivalent of less than $15,000 – which even a poor government like this one
could handle.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
And what is the role of the Kolars in all this? Did the
family pull strings to get special treatment? Are they complicit in historical
distortion? Did they calculatedly change the myth of the tunnel and cut out
their neighbors? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The story has engendered plenty of other bad-mouthing of the
Kolars. – that they don’t pay taxes, on this tourism treasure,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>that Grandma Shida charged soldiers for those
drinks of water.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As a journalist I want to see motives and evidence before I
flinging accusations around. For a week now I’ve been trying out theories and
looking up at old stories done about the tunnel including a 2006 documentary
“The Tunnel and Other Lies”<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>available on
YouTube that goes over the same material as the magazine. And it doesn’t make
sense.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Can’t it just be that the Kolars were patriotic and sharp at
business – and maybe even lucky? I asked a colleague.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
He openly scoffed at my American naiveté.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“Sure, let’s give the Kolars the benefit of
the doubt. We all want Bosnia to succeed.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
“There is no luck involved,” he said flatly. “He makes more
in on year than I do in a lifetime. Luck? Where do you think we live…in Vermont</div>

We sucked up a bunch. Hawley loves shooting flower pictures and she spent a lot of this vacation with her nose and camera lens stuck in leaves. At one point some French travelers pointed to her camera signaling something wrong. She found it was covered in yellow pollen from getting too close. Her shots are amazing -- but even my mundane ones are filled with the bright colors, prickly textures and odd shapes of plants in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEishmJxAoybu9zpKv4K4_PRI-H4CvWqyQt5bj3ET4nljTAagHDucSURLqmQ7IoFRS2zV-2JNqlITQ6NfhVv4QngCQHvv0uaD6twePmC7UGsNFtAKeRValwoxFkBHLEgQbMJ-gYTzQ/s1600-h/P1000331.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer;
