You can buy a book of all the things Mary told the four boys and two girls she appeared to but I demurred after looking through a few. “Peace, peace, peace – and only peace! Peace must reign between God and man and between men!”
She seems to have said things like Be Good, Know that I love you a lot. Can’t we all just get along? Wait, no, that was Rodney King. But in the same ilk.
Non-believers point out that Mary, the Queen of the World, seems to sound a lot like a Bosnian teen-ager in her sayings. All of which got us thinking about how Mary came to select this particular time and place.
The war-wracked Balkans? 1981 still was Cold War era.
Hell, I added, why did she pick teen-agers? Can anyone talk to them?
All those icons and paintings in Istanbul we’re visited lately show unfailing show a bunch of saints and holy people hovering around Mary: John the Baptist, Peter, Paul, Joseph, Jerome and so on. We imagined a board meeting in heaven:
“Hey, Joe, you got the latest conversion figures for Croatia?
“John, they look bad. We better do something.”
“Let’s send Mom. Mary, we got an assignment for you.”
“You want me to go where and do what?”
