Beautiful Bosnia Views from Trebevic -- with Drew and Hawley May 2006
Sarajevo is ringed by mountains I've written often enough but now I'm finally getting to know those mountains. Residents know they all by name and height. With Hawley Johnson visiting from NYC, we hiked to the top of Trebevic *5338 feet* to the SE of the city. The mountain is heavily mined still so you have to be careful to stay on paths. But it's worth the risk. Heavy pine trees drop cones all over the place and at the summit you sit on cool rocks and feel this wonderful breeze.
The city's four other big peaks: Jahorina, 6,276 feet in the SE; Igman 4,928 feet in the SW, Bjelasnica -- the most fun to pronounce, and Treskavica, 5338 feet to the south. They are all part of the Dinaric Alps and explain why Bosnia can feel so much like Switzerland.
