Bear Tower

Reenactment of ancient torture

Exterior of Bear Tower

The historical markers are pretty dry and describe this structure simply as a guard tower that pre-dates even the ancient wall around the city and fortress. But it's called Medjved Kula -- Bear Tower.

Where'd that name come from?

"Kaze se da..."

"Prica..."

These expressions mean: "It is said that" and they introduce all rumors, stories of uncertain original and veracity and way too many journalism articles here.

But about the Bear Tower it is said that the name came from Turkish times when the hard-hearted Turks punished unlucky people by putting them in the round, windowless stone silo with a bear.
