Good Question

We are off 11/4/06 to a week of training in investigative reporting with students at AAB Universitet, a private university in Kosovo. What country, my mother asked me, is Kosovo in. A good question, actually.

Actually Kosovo is a province of Serbia, a former autonomous region of the old Yugoslavia, that’s under UN administration now while they try to figure out whether to keep it in Serbia or make it an independent state or something in between. There aren’t too many Serbs left in this part of Serbia, their having mostly left in droves after war broke out six years ago between the Serbs and Kosovars. The country is overwhelming ethnic Albanian. That is the language; the flag is Albania’s. I keep getting smiles when I ask people, why isn’t Kosovo agitating to join Albania.
