Bells and buzzing phones

Church bells rang at midnight to announce Christmas. I remember them rining in Kampala as well, but not in the US. Do they ring there too and i never heard them? Soon after my phone began buzzing. Muslim friends and co-workers sent SMS wishes for a merry Christmas and there are happy wishes on my phone and email.
