May 1 is not just a Communist holiday

My journalist friend Drazen tells me that Americans keep mixing up Communist traditions with European. And May 1 Labor Day is a hallowed tradition throughout Europe and has been for a long time. The Soviets and Cubans remade it adding the military parades but it's basically like our Memorial Day -- a celebration that summer is finally here.

Or at least it's at the Dalmatian coast and half of Sarajevo at least seems to have driven over to bask in it. You cannot rent a car, nearly all the shops and restaurants are shut and you can walk in the streets safely.

Of course, CIN took a day off and I spent part of mine having a coffee with Drazen.

What kind of a holiday is this Thanksgiving anyway, he asks.

Some kind of capitalist day off?
