Our center has a new American intern, a talented lawyer, traveler, writer, Internet enthusiast whose name is Zephyr.
My new form of cheap entertainment is listening to her try and tell her name to Bosnians.
Zephyr may have been a tough name to deal with even at home – She’s heard more than her share of comments about being full of and breaking – wind. And it’s not as if there aren’t distinctive names here – Jagoda (strawberry) as one example. But they’ve never heard this one.
“Zephyr,” she’ll say, “Zehhhhh-FER, Zephryr. Zaid…Eh….” And she usually ends, I’ll send it to you in an email.
The staff here has rechristened her Zi Zi – a much easier to handle Zee-Zee.
And this is all without her even trying out her middle name on them – Rain.
