Signs of Democratic action

In response to protests by citizens and environmentalists, the Algerian government has announced that it will re-route an $11 billion, 750-mile highway to Morocco and Tunisia to avoid the El Kala coastal park.

The national park is home to predator birds, fox, lynx, tortoise and wild cat. The first motorway among the three countries was supposed to go through 15 KM of the park until now.

The Algerians are getting good at letting the president know their feelings. At last week's national football championship the crowd chanted a song about the high price of potatoes to President Bouteflika in his box. When band music drowned them out, then held up sign with the price tag on them.

French fries and oven roasted potatoes are staples here. So it's a disaster that potatoes are up about twice the normal price to 70 dinars(about $1)a kilo.
