My Guide-Photographer

Meet Zied, the student who ended up driving me all over Tunisia except for the desert south. Next year, he says, next year the south. He was a good sport about taking around a middle-aged western woman who could not talk to him. I liked how he picked out things he liked and rejected over "must-see" spots. You buy one ticket in Tunisian cities that allow you to enter a number of sites at one low price. But we didn't' try to go to all of them. "It's not very important," he said about one museum in Kairouan, "It's boring."

He took over my camera at several points and was an even more enthusiastic chronicler than Okinawa Rose (as Algerian friends have taken to calling me).
