Poulet e chat

As in Algeria, roast chicken is a tres popular lunch entree here. The smell of roasting meat overcomes you as you walk down city streets in the afternoon and racks of little plucked chicken bodies being rotisseried are a staple at sidewalk cafes.

All of which helps explain the huge number of street cats in this city. And they aren't all mangy and skinny like free-roaming cats in most cities. These animals do not need to battle each other for scarce table scraps. They just waddle down the streets and slash open any garbage bag at the curb they come across and a feast of chicken bones and remnants come tumbling out.

At a subconscious level I refuse to indulge I know what these means about the potential rat population here.

(I am too embarrassed to be spotted and reviled as a stupid American tourist to take a photo of this, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

And no, Mom, I'm not planning to adopt any more cats. Relax.)
