Speeders aren't the only ones who get off with easy punishment here.
We are looking for several people to interview who are in prison and having a difficult time scheduling these talks. We needed permission from the state corrections department and then permission from the prison wardens, then we have to go see the prisoners to find out IF they'll talk to us. But deciding when to go has turned into a problem -- because the prisoners aren't there on weekends!
What?
Yes, prisoners even those convicted of serious crimes like wife beatings and assault get out for weekends and holidays.
This raises the question of why we are bothering to get permission to go to the prisons at all. We could just catch them at home!
In the summer of 2012, I'm back in Sarajevo working with people who are good journalists and after all this time also good friends. My language skills are no better, alas, but I hang out with natives and internationals in the know. So I'm planning in this space to tell Bosnian stories to American readers, with my Bosnian friends free to call me out on errors or wrong headed interpretations. This is a fascinating area of the world and these are interesting times.
