It's just a coincidence, I'm sure, that the book I tucked in my bag on this weekend trip is "The Secret Life of Bees." I've been meaning to read it since it came out in 2002 and landed for months on the bestseller lists. But I have just gotten around to it now.
Odd, because a major figure in this story is Mary.
A young motherless girl in search of love and understanding happens upon sisters who have invented their own religion based upon a ship's figurehead that they've turned into a black Madonna. It's a book worth reading (author is Sue Monk Kidd) but the main point might be of some interest to the pilgrims here:
"Our Lady is not some magical being out there somewhere, like a fairy godmother. She's not the statue in the parlor. She's something inside of you...
"You have to find a mother inside yourself. We all do. Even if we already have a mother...You don't have to put your hand on Mary's heart to get strength and consolation and rescue and all the other things we need to get through life.
"You can place it right here on your own heart."
