6/3/06This is my second trip to Dubrovnik on the Croatian Coast. Like that sight of your first baby, you can’t ever really reclaim the moment of first seeing this walled medieval wonder, but it is still lovely.
We are staying at a pension just outside the walls with a view of the Adriatic out the bedroom window that has us working overtime with cameras before we unpack.
We have hot chocolate in the same café near the Statue of Roland that Jennifer LaFleur and I discovered on the first trip and we strolled through the cloisters, again, my personal favorite spot in the city.
And we went for the obligatory walk along the walls of the city. Supposedly they put on a summer production of MacBeth using the ramparts and fortresses in the sea as backdrop. I am going to look that up and see about getting tickets.
After we’ve gone about a quarter turn around the walls, our good luck regarding weather runs out, and the sky opens. A cold downpour leaves us shivering and soaked with no place to hide. So we kind of slog on to the nearest stairway, shuttle dripping over the cobblestone squares and we are feeling pretty miserable when, LO. The Wine Bar beckons. It’s warm, wooden, comfortable and serves up a glass of rich red wine. My hair is string, my velour jacket is ruined, but life feels good again.
