Nabila, a young woman we're working with at the newspaper, came back today from vacation, bearing a little plate. On it were the delectable almond and honey cakes that are served at all fetes here, from weddings to birthdays to graduations.
She'd been away, she said, for her sister's wedding and she had brought us back something in accord with custom so that we could "taste the wedding."
As we dug in, we told her how appropriate this gift was since it was 7/7/7 July 7, 2007, a date considered so numerically lucky that you can't find a unused chapel or reception hall in much of the world today. Estimates were that four times as many weddings would take place this day as on a normal Saturday in July.
Sevens figure in Biblical, Torah and Hindu lore and so triple sevens are regarded as good omen in many places. Not in Algeria, but then, weddings here are major events anyway on any date.
Anyway, people getting married need all the luck they can get. The rest of us consider it lucky to be eating cookies.
