Arches of Severus then and now

The drawing shows what the Arch of Septimus Severus looked like in Roman times and the photo shows what is left now. I am not good at imagining what rubble may have looked like. That expression "exploring" ruins always made me scoff. But I do like thinking that this place has been on the earth for so long. Like the Roman Forum, Dougga was ransacked by conquerors. Christians did pulled off the marble and dragged down the stones of the Forum to reuse -- Vandals did it to Dougga.

The Arch of Severus Alexander on the other side of the old town survived in better shape and remains very beautiful amid the olive trees.
