Oasis

Some smart tourist manager constructed this leafy outdoor cafe which provided a reprieve from the fierce sun for this Japanese backpacker and for us.
Dougga was deserted. I thought it was the heat -- spring is the time to visit here when I'm told the countryside is spangled with wildflowers that are little more than dry husks now. But when you read travel notes and blogs from others who have been here they all say the same thing -- you'll have the place to yourself.
I used to be envious of my friend Barbara Zang who has traveled all over the world mostly by herself. I thought that was so bold, a little courageous and very cool. Sitting in this cafe I suddenly realized, oh yeah, guess I'm doing it. There are comforts traveling alone. You don't have to keep any pace, eat at certain times, or carry on like a good sport when you don't really like something.
