Tipaza is a wonderful day trip from Algiers. The road out from the capital is lined with farms, greenhouses and the Mediterranean sea. Then the town is filled with souvenir shops and small restaurants -- some little more than tents set up next to grills full of fish. The smell is wonderful. In a lovely one-room museum with an attached garden we found this amazing collection of Roman statuary and glassware mosaics and artifacts like oil lamps and needles. They wouldn't let us take pictures even for money because we didn't have authorization. From who? we asked. The minister, they told us. Of course, the museum also didn't sell postcards, though it has a website. Supposedly funded by UNESCO it doesn't work well, but gives a hint at the treasures inside.
